I truly enjoyed reading The Arrivals by Meg Mitchell Moore, and I took my time with it. Perhaps it wouldn't have meant so much to me had I not been the mother of a grown child. Perhaps it wouldn't have been so poignant and funny and satisfying if I hadn't recently returned from a vacation spot that I had visited with my late parents, that last time alone with them, just Mom and Dad and me. The Arrivals was a very good read, perfect for me.On the other hand, once a parent always a parent. I just got back from a trip with my grown daughter and I found myself falling into old patterns, offering her the best seat, letting her sleep a little later, making sure all was well in her little world and being a mom in a more tangible way.
I laughed many times while reading The Arrivals, which is this author's debut novel. I felt for the parents who had their three kids come home unexpectedly, crowding everyone into a house that had felt large enough when the children were young, but felt a little close when grandkids and in-laws were added. There were some scenes in which Ginny, the mother, is up late at night and she realizes that she has missed closing up a house when all her children are safe under her roof. William, the father, goes through a kind of claustrophobic episode, lamenting that the clutter and mess of their household has gotten out of hand. There is drama and situations to be resolved with each of the kids. They all are selfish at times, reverting back to the way children will be, even though they are grown-ups. There is also a lot of love shown and understanding and finally, contentment.
Oh, one other thing, the setting is Vermont, a state I have never visited. In The Arrivals, there is a field trip taken to the Ben & Jerry's Factory, which apparently has a Flavor Graveyard section, along with lots of other good stuff to see and eat. I'd love to take a trip there. For me, Cherry Garcia is a separate food group!
I look forward to seeing what Meg Mitchell Moore will share with all of us next. This book is recommended.
From the author's website:
It's early summer when Ginny and William's peaceful life in Burlington, Vermont, comes to an abrupt halt. First, their daughter Lillian arrives, two children in tow, to escape her crumbling marriage. Next, their son Stephen and his pregnant wife Jane show up for a weekend visit, which extends indefinitely. When their youngest daughter Rachel appears, fleeing her difficult life in New York, Ginny and William find themselves consumed again by the chaos of parenthood—only this time around, their children are facing adult problems. By summer's end, the family gains new ideas of loyalty and responsibility, exposing the challenges of surviving the modern family. And the old adage, once a parent, always a parent, has never rung so true.

I love the sound of this one, Kay. You're right about the way us mums treat our kids. I don't think we ever stop being mums quite frankly.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite ice-cream flavour is cherry garcia too. Sadly it no longer seems to be available over here. We visited an B&J ice-cream parlour in Memphis once and I thought I'd died and gone to heaven with all the flavours. LOL.
I loved this one, too. Glad you enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a book I must read! When we remodeled our house 8 years ago, it unexpectedly turned into basically rebuilding. My parents let us (me, my husband, 3 kids, and the dog!) live with them for 11 months... what an amazing experience. My mother would set out vitamins for me every morning... it was like I was a child and parent at the same time! My kids became much closer to their grandparents, too. I wouldn't want to do it again, but am glad we all had that experience. Now that my kids are in college, I can see relief and comfort settle over them when they come home, too.
ReplyDeleteHope you can visit Vermont one day. It is a beautiful state!
Thank you for introducing me to this book, Kay! I want to read it now. As a mother of 3 sons, grandmother of 4, and survivor of similar "I'm back" seasons, I identify with these thoughts! As an avid reader, I love your blog. You can see my own blogs at www.stonesandfeathers.wordpress.com, www.kitchenkeepers.wordpress.com, and www.mappingsforthismorning.blogsot.com Come visit, and read awhile! :)
ReplyDeleteHello!
ReplyDeleteNan from letters from a hill farm loved this book too. I think I would like to read it just because I love the cover. (Yes, I know you shouldn't judge a book, etc, etc...but it IS beautiful, isn't it?)
I bought this at the Borders closing sale. It couldn't have come at a better time since my oldest moved back home last spring. It's been hard to decide when to parent and when not to parent. It's hard to ground them at 23.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of this one before but now I HAVE TO read it. I love those kinds of family dramas that I can relate to. Thanks Kay.
ReplyDeleteI loved your review of this one and how you related it to your own life. I feel the need to read it now!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the Cherry Garcia ice cream!
Thank you so much for the thoughtful write-up of my book! I'm so glad you liked it and I too love how you related it to your own life in this post.. It's so wonderful to find readers out here talking and saying such nice things. And, yes, I agree with others who say you must visit Vermont someday! It's gorgeous there. Thanks everyone for the comments too.
ReplyDeleteThis looks so good. My mom has the same problem, never takes the best of anything when we are together! Drives me crazy. (although when she gives up sleep so I can have some I welcome it :))
ReplyDeleteNow you've made me want to got to Vermont and taste some Ben & Jerry's.
Thanks everyone for stopping by and commenting.
ReplyDeleteMeg, thanks so much for writing such an absorbing book. I truly enjoyed it.
Mary Ann and Kay, thanks to both of you for visiting my blog. Always nice to meet new people!
I read this a few weeks ago and am in the middle of writing my review, so I'll wait to read yours once I've finished. In a nutshell, I LOVED IT!!!
ReplyDeleteI went to a reading over the summer with J. Courtney Sullivan and she recommended this book - it sounds great! I can relate to feeling watched over and cared for when I am with my parents - it is actually very comforting (in small doses!)
ReplyDeleteI loved this book too. I think each of us can relate with one or more of the characters.
