Catching Up...Something New?

I'm going to try a new manner of sharing what's going on in my life - reading or otherwise.  I'll call the posts - Catching Up - and they might contain almost anything.  In my pursuit of simplicity on this blog and also taking a step away from formal reviews, I plan to "catch up" now and then or maybe weekly - but not on a set schedule.  I could do the Sunday Salon, which many bloggers use, but I don't want to tie myself down to one particular day.  I plan to continue a weekly offering of Waiting on Wednesday (upcoming books to highlight - mostly mysteries) and Saturday Snapshot (pictures taken by me or family pictures).  We'll see how it goes - so, be looking for the title of "Catching Up...".  Whatever I'm sharing in particular will be after the three dots - hopefully with a zingy twist.

Do you ever end up with all your annual or semi-annual checkups occuring back to back?  I've spent this week and last visiting my doctors - a well-woman visit, a dentist visit (teeth cleaning), a mammogram, and Monday, eye doctor.  Whew!  Why don't I just spread those out?  I'm supposed to return to the dentist at some point for a couple of tiny fillings.  I'll get around to it, but I was disappointed that further treatment was necessary.  I haven't been wearing my mouth guard (yes, I'm a grinder) and so, that's what I get.  All else seemed to be good.  I always get a little nervous though.

I've been working with a personal trainer in the last few months and my sessions are coming to an end.  I'll be on my own for exercise, but I think I've got a plan for continuing to make progress on the strengthening front.  I've also been "learning" to cook again.  In the last few years, my hubby and I have eaten out a lot - time constraints and the whole "too tired to cook" excuse.  Now that we are living in an area that doesn't have a restaurant on every corner, I'm back in the kitchen.  We're also trying to eat healthier and my old way of cooking is just not great.  So, I'm learning about cooking fresh things, veggies and fruit and fish (at home no less).  I'm marinating meats and we're using that new outdoor kitchen grill a lot.  It's a whole new way of eating.  For me, butter has always been a favorite food group (yes I said group - I could put butter on anything).  Olive oil has become my best friend and I'm not tempted to slather it on a piece of bread and munch on it (oh, I don't have much bread around either).

On the reading front, I've finally picked up a few books in Robyn Carr's Virgin River series to finish that one out or finish all those that are available at this point.  I went over to NetGalley and got the one that just published and also one that will publish in December.  I wrote about these books earlier this year - Robyn Carr's Virgin River Series.  I've finished:
I like the characters in these contemporary romances.  They might be a little racy for some, but you could just skip right over that part.  The whole town of Virgin River is populated by people that I've come to love.  I'll be sorry to be caught up, but I think I'll be looking for another series like this.

I've also been reading Deborah Crombie's long-running mystery series, starring Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James.  I'm taking that one slowly and finished the 4th entry - Mourn Not Your Dead - earlier in October.  Otherwise, I'm listening to some re-reads in audio - Nora Roberts' Three Sister's Island Trilogy and Louise Penny's Gamache series.

So, what do you think?  Could you read a "catch up" post every week or so?  This sure seems like a mish-mash of items, but I think it will suit me well.  Have a good weekend and happy reading!

  1. I use to do Sunday Salon, but then found that some Sundays I did not have much to share, so I stopped and tried to use Sunday as a day for a book review. It's really a matter of what works for you Kay. "your blog, your business" LOL Hope this fits the bill for you.

Possibly a snowy weekend for us --hard to believe. Enjoy the w/end !

  2. I like your Catching Up idea! I tried the first Virgin River book and loved the story, hated the sex. My mom loves them though. Maybe I should give them another try.

  3. Virgin River characters are faves with me too. Great series! I like your catching up idea too.
As for doctor's visits - I would rather have them all together and then not have to think about it for months. Unfortunately, I'm still on the 3 month checkup for cancer schedule. Maybe I should say fortunately because I am a survivor!

  4. Definitely--I like the personal touch, Kay!

  5. Diane, I can't believe snow already! Nan has some pictures of hers. On the pumpkin!

Beth, I know what you mean. Sometimes I don't mind those parts and sometimes I skip them. The storyline itself is the hook for me. :-)

Kaye, I do understand what you're saying and also understand about the cancer checkups. I think that's why I go into my "well" visits a little anxious. Here's to cancer-free decades ahead for both of us!!

    Thanks very kindly, Jenclair!

  6. When insurance companies only pay for visits every 12 months or 6 months, all of the appts end up piled on top of one another. I dealt with the same stuff this week. The Boy and Girl had their physicals, I had labs. In Nov they have dental appts, followed by my dental appt, followed by The Boys Orthodontist appt. Ugh.

  7. Catching up... it sounds great to me! I have only just started blogging but I think you have a great blog, whatever you like sounds good to me! :-)
    Another Kay!

  8. I think this is a great idea for a posting! It feels like a real letter from you, Kay.
I read all those Crombie books slowly. She has such fine descriptions of both locales and people that I like to savor them.

  9. Do whatever works for you, Kay. I'll keep reading. :)

I've only read the first one in the Virgin River series. While I thought it was good, I wasn't necessarily eager to read the next. Interestingly enough though, I've been literally thinking about the folk from Virgin River for a couple weeks now! (I'm shocked at how my brain works sometimes. LOL) So, if they keep calling me, I'll probably read another within the next couple months. I'd love to read the Christmas one, but I'm sure there would be too many jumps in the story line and I want to read this one in order.

  10. I like your Catching Up idea. I've been thinking of doing something similar, maybe once or twice a month. I'm also feeling the need to minimise my blogging. I like the personal touch in other's blogs and should do it more in mine too.

  11. Ti, it always sounds like a good choice to bunch them together, but then...not so much.

Kay, yes, another Kay. Except for in the blogging world, I don't think I've ever known another Kay.

A real letter, huh, Nan? Well, you should know. LOL

Joy, there are a lot of books in the Virgin River series now, but I've liked reading them in order. Lots of recurring characters and it's fun to catch up.

Margot, so many of us seem to be looking for a simpler way to blog.

  12. A Catching Up post is good! I like it! I am a grinder too, and in fact have my night guard in right now. Sometimes I wear it for car trips too because I get a lot of road rage!

And I'm with you on the butter. I have been known to melt it in a cup with syrup or honey and just drink it. It's a wonder I'm not dead by now! Why does everything so good have to be so bad for you?!!!

  13. I think the new idea is great. I've struggled with how to incorporate my non-reading life into my book blog. Sometimes I just don't feel like blogging about books, or it gets tiresome and pat. It's so difficult, though. Or it was, until I just decided to go for it and make my blog a personal blog about books. Ta da!

  14. Every blog should have it's own personality and a Catching Up post sounds like it would work best for you. I'll still be stopping by however you decide to arrange things here.

I like the personal touch and the non-book posts add interest.

  15. It's great to hear a little bit about what is going on in your life!

Btw - thanks so much for dropping by my readathon post and for making a donation to the Brooke Jackman Foundation. I am glad to have introduced the charity to some people- it was very thoughtful of you to make a donation

  16. Personal, bookish posts are great, Kay! I've considered a personal trainer, but right now cannot imagine when I'd fit one in! I am also falling short on the cooking end too. Hopefully as Gage starts to eat more of what we eat it will force me to have better food on the table.
I hate it when I catch up on a new series I've discovered. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I keep discovering new ones I love!

  17. I love this post....fun and it is a great way to get to know you better!!! I know it seems like a lot of appointments in one day but hey, they're almost all done right? I should talk, I really put my health checks on the back burner. I think you're going to be adding to my reading list soon!!1

  18. Yes, yes, yes... I really like the Catching Up idea! I'm laughing though because I had check-up, mammogram, blood work, and dentist in the last couple of weeks, too. Guess that should take care of things for a while.

  19. I love the idea of 'catching up' posts. I've been doing something similar with my weekend updates (sometimes on Saturday and sometimes on Sunday) and I'm continually playing with the format and even skipping the occasional weekend.
