Catching Up....Reading and stuff for a while

Every year about this time I seem to get the urge to reread books.  I think it's because every year about this time I tend to start getting overwhelmed by holidays and shopping and stuff.  It's not that I don't love the holidays, because I do.  I enjoy spending time with family and, while I am so not a shopper, I do like finding great gifts for family and friends.  I love holiday songs and the cooler weather and preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas.

This year, we're hosting both holidays at our home for family.  That's a good thing because we have the space and we have a lovely place to share with them.  My mother-in-law has recently had surgery on her knee and she has agreed to let me host the meals.  That's kind of a big deal because she loves to do for family at this time.  Our Thanksgiving plans are still up in the air - number wise anyway.  We may be a small group or a larger one.  Either is OK.  Christmas will be bigger.

I'm still getting a few things settled here.  I've been looking at bedding selections and I still want to have a few more decorative touches around.  We've spent an awful lot this year on house stuff and I've wanted to spread out more expenditures, but we're getting closer to holiday time.

All this is to say that, if you take a look at my archives, you'll see that I rarely post in November and December.  In fact, except for the first year I blogged (2007), I have taken breaks or even expressed my intention to stop blogging each year since.  I find myself in the same place this year, but I'm going to plan on stepping away for the rest of November and December.  Usually, I seem to get back into the swing as the year end posts come around.  We'll see how that goes.  So.....

See me reading or rereading....see me doing other things....see me not blogging....on a break for a while....a long while....or a short while....but a while.

I'm going to step away from the computer for at least a week (or longer if I can).  No blogging, no reading blogs, no emails except what I must (only must) deal with.  No commenting.  No reading about what's to come in books (especially this).  That's the goal.

Have a lovely holiday time!  I'll probably check in on your blogs now and then.  Here's to a stress free and peaceful holiday season.  I'll likely see you in January.

  2. The holiday times can be stressful, so it's understandable to step away from the blog for awhile. Enjoy your time away!

  4. My holiday stuff is so much quieter than it used to be. I used to buy for many more people, especially children of friends but as they've grown I've stopped. So it is pretty much just Tom and the kids, including Matt. A couple books for his parents. A book for a few other friends. Period. I actually miss all the commotion and in-store shopping. I LOVE shopping. :<) Enjoy your happy times!

  5. Planning for the holidays can be stressful, but sometimes it's fun too. Especially when you get to be the host :)

I was okay the other day, but I feel a tad of the holidays blues coming on. It's hit me the last 3 years. I know mainly it has to do with finances. A worry I never had before furloughs and a failing family business. I need my blog to remain sane though so I plan to stick it out and hopefully not fall into a hole.

  6. Like Nan, we've really cut back on gift-giving, not necessarily due to finances, but more due to the fact that the kids of friends are grown and we have a fairly small family that doesn't seem too interested in exchanging gifts. I still like to send Christmas cards (with a couple of photos), but email, blogging and Face Book has taken away the need to write long, chatty letters to the recipients of those cards. This year, I vow to start baking for friends and neighbors as soon as Thanksgiving has come and gone. Working in retail is a bit exhausting (what an understatement!!) during the holidays, but I missed the baking and visits with neighbors last year, so I'm going to make sure to put that on high priority in 2011! We'll have a quiet Christmas, as usual, but we've gotten fairly used to that... I'll gather up a stack of holiday books and enjoy the quiet evenings...and look forward to my trip to Hawaii in March!

I'll miss your posts, but we'll be in touch.

  9. I just wanted to thank you for recommending "The Territory". I got it from the library today and have already read the first chapter. I couldn't stop because it was so good. Enjoy you break, Kay.

  10. Enjoy your time, but please come back in January, I have only just found you, Kay! I really like the way that you think and the way that you write. There are a lot of Kays in the world (look who is typing this!) but there is only one Kay from My Random Acts of Reading! Have a wonderful, relaxing time the rest of the year, but please come back (but only if you feel like it!) :-)

  13. Hosting both events adds lots of stress, even when you want to do it. I'll miss seeing you around :( Maybe you should just stop by my place on Tuesdays. My quizzes really aren't reading, they are keeping your mind sharp! :)
    Have a great Thanksgiving,
