The Devil Colony by James Rollins

Deep in the Rocky Mountains, a gruesome discovery—hundreds of mummified bodies—stir international attention and fervent controversy. Despite doubts to the bodies’ origins, the local Native American Heritage Commission lays claim to the prehistoric remains, along with the strange artifacts found in the same cavern: gold plates inscribed with an unfathomable script.
During a riot at the dig site, an anthropologist dies horribly: burned to ash in a fiery explosion in plain view of television cameras. All evidence points to a radical group of Native Americans, including one agitator, a teenage firebrand who escapes with a vital clue to the murder and calls on the one person who might help: her uncle, Painter Crowe, director of Sigma Force.
To protect his niece and uncover the truth, Painter will ignite a war across the nation’s most powerful intelligence agencies. Yet, an even greater threat looms as events in the Rocky Mountains have set in motion a frightening chain reaction, a geological meltdown that threatens the entire western half of the U.S.
From the volcanic peaks of Iceland to the blistering deserts of the American Southwest, from the gold vaults of Fort Knox to the bubbling geysers of Yellowstone, Painter Crowe joins forces with Commander Gray Pierce to penetrate the shadowy heart of a dark cabal, one that has been manipulating American history since the founding of the thirteen colonies.
But can he discover the truth—one that could topple governments—before it destroys all he holds dear?

OK, have you noticed that I seem to be on a thriller binge?  Yes, I have.  James Rollins is the author of this latest book featuring members of the Sigma Force, a shadowy government group of ex-military scientists.  The Devil Colony is the 7th in the series and, yes, I have again broken my vow to read series books in order.  Well, I told you guys that I was trying to be more comfortable with doing that.  It's not working very well for me.  I totally enjoyed this way, way, way over-the-top adventure novel.  Lots of stuff going on.  Situations that were completely improbable and I still turned the pages quick, quick, quick.  My only regret is not knowing the back stories or why one character responded a certain way to another character.  So, yes, I'll be reading more books by this veterinarian turned novelist.  I like the Sigma Force and want to know more about them.  I'm not a fan of action movies for nothing, you know?

  1. Seeing these kinds of books reminds me of my teenage years and early twenties. It's pretty much all I read. It's funny to see the reading phases we go through. I love these kind, though, and I'm not done with them for good.

  4. I am on a thriller binge too! I started the next Jack Reacher book already. This is my year of reading whatever I want and it feels great.
I haven't tried this series, but it does look like one I'd like.

  5. Oh, I'm an action thriller junkie, and maybe I'll add this series to my list. It sounds really good!

My favorite series is Lee Child's Jack Reacher, and although I didn't read them in order, I've read them all now.

  7. I've read a few Sigma Force novels and enjoyed them immensely - they're definitely page turners! I've never been one to try and read books in order either. It's so hard to resist when a later book falls into my hands before an earlier one in the series!
