Hello my blogging friends! Yes, this is Kay from My Random Acts of Reading. First of all, may I wish all of you a very Happy New Year! I can't believe that it is 2012 already. Doesn't it seem just yesterday that we were entering the new century? And here we are in 2012. Amazing.
I struggled for the last few weeks with what to do about a new blog. I've been wanting to step away from the title "My Random Acts of Reading" and also step away from feeling like a book blogger only. The way I knew to do this was to end the book blog. My time away has been productive and I knew that I still wanted to maintain connections with the wonderful friends that I've made in the blogging world. Yes, I could comment on your blogs and give a bit of information about my life, but I didn't want to have post-size comments. I also have wanted to change up the design of my blog for a long time. Well, today, my friend Les launched her new look and new name. She went from "Lesley's Book Nook" to "Prairie Horizons". Isn't that a lovely name? And it is appropriate because she does live on the prairie in the midwest city of Lincoln, Nebraska.
I've always loved the look of my friend Nan's (Letters from a Hill Farm) blog. So simple. So clean. So perfect. Today, I decided to make my change when it became clear that I could just change my name and my design, while leaving the old blog below. I thought about deleting it and I did delete a number of posts, most of the more personal items. However, I hated to take out all the book reviews and discussion posts.
This is my compromise. A new blog is born here, entitled Purple Sage and Scorpions. An odd name? Perhaps. It is very much a word picture of life here in Central Texas. My life. The picture you see below the title is of purple sage, which grows all around us here. I know it's found in other spots too, probably all the western and southwestern states. I've always loved the dusty green of the leaves and cheerful purple of the flowers. It will represent the happy parts of my life.
Scorpions are a fact of life here as well. One of the first things I did after moving to our new home was to consult with the "bug" people or exterminators. I did not want to find myself stepping on a scorpion in the dark if I got up at night. We have lots of limestone rocks in our area and lots of trees. Scorpions love both. The scorpions will represent the darker parts of my life.
So there you have it. My new effort in the blogging world. I will be stepping away from books and stepping into life posts. There's no telling what I might write about, but there will be no formal book reviews. I hope you guys will come along with me as I voyage here in central Texas.
Kay: I cannot tell you how happy I am that you are not leaving the blog world - I don't care what you write about, I just want to be part of your little world here :)
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!!!
I LOVE it, and am so very happy you are back! I was just going to write 'i don't care what you write about' when I saw that Wendy had used those very words. :<)
ReplyDeletePurple sage is beautiful stuff. Scorpions not so much. I suppose you oughtta post a picture of one so the rest of us who live in scorpion-less locales can see what we are not missing.
Good luck with the new blog! I changed my layout around slightly too since it's a new year. Starting off fresh!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you're back, Kay! I have missed you. Write about whatever you want to write about....I'll read your blog no matter what. However, feel free to pass along any good book recommendations. I feel like we often enjoyed the same things.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you will still be blogging. The new look is wonderful and refreshing. Cheers to a "new you" in 2012.
ReplyDeleteI got so giddy when I saw this pop up on my blog roll! Missed you and your voice! Love the new look and outlook in general!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
Kay, I am so happy to see how you have transformed your blog into something that works for you. I think that is so important and authentic. I am still trying to find the direction for my own blog. I love the new name and header picture. I am so glad that you have found a way to keep blogging. It sounds like many of us bloggers are reassessing things this year! All the best!!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Kay ! The new look is awesome and I am so happy that you will be continuing to write about any ole topic that tickles you.
ReplyDeleteHope to see you in Georgetown sometime and at the Spicewood bookclub.
Melissa
Welcome!
ReplyDeleteKay,
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful start to the new year to find you have a new blog.
I only just started my blog when you said that you would end yours and it made me so sad, and now, I am happy again.
I love the name of this blog. I think it is perfect.
Happy new year!
Love,
Kay
Happy New Year! Best of luck with your new blogging plans! I love the header picture.
ReplyDeleteI am so happy to see you back, so very happy. :)It was hard seeing your last post but whatever makes you happy is the right thing to do. I know I'll keep popping in to see what you are up to. Have a wonderful 2012!
ReplyDeleteI too am so happy to see you back! And we also, as you probably know, have purple sage and scorpions! :--) Can't wait to see how your new blog evolves!
ReplyDeleteDelighted that you're staying with us, Kay. Made my day. :-) Happy New Year to you.
ReplyDeleteLovely look, and lovely to have a new beginning, isn't it? I'm looking forward to what you have to say in 2012, just as I enjoyed what you've said in years past.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! And I am so glad you are back - I was sad when I read your goodbye post.
ReplyDeleteAll the best for 2012!
kay, Glad to see you back blogging. Your new blog is lovely. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you back to blogging Kay! I love the new look and blog idea! I hope the new year is good to you!
ReplyDeleteI love it - new year, new name, new look... new freedom. So happy you're not leaving the blogging world, Kay.
ReplyDelete:) Glad to know that you are going to be posting again, whether about books or life!
ReplyDeleteWhen we lived in south Texas when I was young, scorpions were a fact of life, and I still find them pretty scary. Oddly, I am a Scorpio and should be less judgmental!
Anyway, I love the new name and the new look, Kay!
As everyone else has stated, I can't tell you how happy I am to see your new blog!! I've missed you, in spite of our usual emails. I love the new template and name, and I will be happy with whatever you decide to write about. I had to laugh when I read your new name, though. As you recall, when we built our house in TX, it was built on a nest of scorpions, which took several months to kill off. Not a fun time, that's for sure. I hope you haven't had any problems with finding any inside your house!
ReplyDeleteI love the header and the background matches my walls in here! Since I live in northern Texas, I would love to learn more about where you live.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
Carol
Oh Kay! I smiled so big when I saw this post this morning. I love the idea of purple sage and scorpions (well, the sage, not so much the scorpians) and I look forward to seeing your blogs and learning more about you.
ReplyDeleteHappy happy new year.
I love your new name and look, Kay! And I am glad you are sticking around. :-). Me too. I will still mostly talk about books as I am most comfortable in that arena, but I plan to venture onto other topics as well.
ReplyDeleteI find it hard to write about motherhood, I confess. I am so self-conscious and the depression doesn't help. We'll see. I am in for another year at least. :-)
Thank you, thank you everyone for giving me such a warm welcome back. I'm glad that you approve of the name and look of my blog. I'm really liking it.
ReplyDeleteFabulous to see you back! Love the new look, new name and new life to your blog!
ReplyDeleteI love the quirky title and hope your new focus provides you happiness and joy as you continue in this blogging world. I'm so happy to see you back!
ReplyDeleteNow - where are those completed house photos?!? :)
Happy New Year, Kay!
Happy New Year, I wish you the best with your new endeavour. Anything with purple in it i'm fan :-)
ReplyDeleteYay! So glad you've returned to the world of blogging!! Happy new year!
ReplyDeleteI love the purple flowers at the top of your blog. Welcome in your new format. I'll look forward to watching your journey.
ReplyDeleteYou scared me for a second when I clicked over here...glad you are keeping at it, just making some changes.
ReplyDeleteI think my blog morphed on its own from not only books, but work outs, personal happenings etc... I love mixing it up!
HooRay for your return. I like the new look, the new name and the new direction. But most of all, I'm glad you are still here.
ReplyDelete(a relieved sigh) Kay, I second everyone else's smiles and happy encouragement. We are all so glad you are back :) It's funny how blogging friends become so ingrained in our "real" life. Looking forward to the sage talk, not so sure about the scorpions.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back. Nice new name and a new year.
ReplyDeleteI certainly understand not being only about books or having a bookish name. I feel the same way, which is why I have a blog with the name Apple Tree in it! I like to write about other things too... I just happen to like reading a lot.
Love the fresh, new layout. I think many of us are evolving in the way we approach book reviews with less formality and more variety. And I think it's great!
I am SO sorry I have been so absent from you blog and missed all the changes taking place in your life. It seems that we have been on a similar journey - just in different parts of the country :)
ReplyDeleteI look forward to following your posts in 2012!
I hope you enjoy your fresh new start!
