Saturday Snapshot - February 4th

Alyce of At Home With Books is the originator of this weekly event. Feel free to post any photos that you or your family members have taken and then go over to her blog and add your link.

Not really sure what I should call this, but I knew I had to show a picture of it.  Cactus in a tree - not only in a tree, but growing in a tree.  This old live oak is near a Chinese restaurant that my husband and I frequent, often after church on Sundays.  I will admit this is a new one to me.  Not sure if this grew naturally or someone put it there, but I'm thinking it must have been "natural" - hmmm...maybe not.  What do you think?  The electrical conduit that you can see is there because this tree is right by the outdoor patio area, which is lighted at night.

  1. Glad you explained the cord because an electrified cactus in a tree would have just been too much to contemplate! ;)

It certainly is eye-catching. I hope it is left to grow and prosper. Since it is near a business, my guess would be that someone cleverly placed the cactus there.

    Great pic!

  2. I think someone put it there and now it's taken on a life of it's own. It does look nice though.

  4. I'd love to see it when it's blooming! Great shot, I've never seen anything like it.

  5. Hmm that is curious, isn't it? They usually have pretty shallow roots so I could imagine that some one placed it there and now it's just rooted itself to the tree.

  6. Very unusual -- I had to study it a few times. (Love your new header).

  9. Cacti settle in pretty easily. All it would need is a little soil in the grooves of the tree bark. What a thouht. A cactus growing in a tree.

  10. I have never seen that before so I am tempted to say someone put it there..but, who knows!

  11. An interesting depiction of co-habitation. And, it bears the question of who nurtures whom? Sometimes we are able to grow in the most unlikely places.

  12. We see cactus growing out from anywhere and everywhere. I expect animals eat the reproductive parts and then deposit them in different places. And cactus doesn't need much dirt. My latest thing to do is to make these little mammillaria "sculptures" by planting them on top of rock indentations.

  13. Plants are tough! They'll grow wherever they find a niche. Interesting pictures.

  14. I have a feeling someone set it there, but I could be wrong.

  15. I think it could have grown there naturally, like the orchids that grow on trees in the Everglades. Nature is amazing. Here's Mine

  16. I thought it was ivy until you explained. I have never seen cactus in a tree before, so my guess is someone did it on purpose. Very cool though!

  19. It had to have been put there because cactus do not normally grow out of trees. However, this is quite interesting to see.
